Abstract

This research is motivated by the global energy crisis due to declining fossil fuel reserves, necessitating the development of renewable energy sources (EBT) such as hydrogen gas through water electrolysis. This study aims to analyze the effect of KOH solution concentration variations (1%–5%) combined with natural coconut water electrolyte, and to compare the use of aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe) electrode materials on hydrogen gas production rate in a wet cell system. The method used is quantitative laboratory experimentation with a 15 V DC power supply, 500 mL electrolyte volume, and 60-minute testing duration. Hydrogen and oxygen gas measurement used MQ-8 and MQ-135 sensors based on Arduino Uno in PPM units. Results show that 5% KOH concentration provides the highest gas production rate for both electrode types. The combination of aluminum electrodes with coconut water and 5% KOH achieves a maximum hydrogen gas production of 787.48 ppm, while 1% concentration yields minimum values. Iron electrodes outperform in pure water media (hydrogen 730.82 ppm at 5% KOH), while aluminum electrodes dominate in coconut water media.
