Jika kecepatan aliran massa air didalam pipa dikurangi atau dihentikan sama sekali akan menimbulkankenaikan tekanan secara mendadak. Tekanan ini terjadi karena adanya kejutan aliran akibat perubahan energiregangan yang dikenal dengan phenomena “effect water hammer“. Hal ini sering terjadi pada instalasi turbinair, karena adanya pengurangan beban secara mendadak. Fenomena ini sangat berbahaya bagi instalasiPembangkit Listrik Tenaga Air (PLTA). Salah satu cara untuk menghindari atau mengurangi kerusakan padasaluran pipa , yakni dengan memasang surge tank (tangki pengelak), hal ini dipilih karena kostruksinyarelatif murah, sederhana dan tidak memerlukan perawatan khusus. Hasilnya adalah tercapainya kondisi stabildari permukaan air dari terjadinya osilasi permukaan air dalam tangki pengelak.References
