Siak River has an important role in the historical development of Pekanbaru City as a trade route, transportation, and interaction space for the Malay community. However, the development of urban areas has shifted community activities away from the riverfront, resulting in the decline in social, cultural, and recreational functions of the waterfront area. On the other hand, high cultural activities and the needs of inclusive public space have not been supported by adequate facilities. This condition indicates the need to revitalize the Siak Riverfront area, which is able to restore the relationship between the community and the river while strengthening the local identity of the area.
Therefore, this study aims to design the Urban Riverfront as a Cultural Park in the Siak Riverfront, Pekanbaru, using the Placemaking approach. The method used included field observation, literature study, site analysis, analysis of user activities, and the implementation of Placemaking principles as a basis for formulating the design concept. The analysis was carried out to identify the potential and constraints of the site, users' needs, the character of cultural activities, and opportunities for creating meaningful public space.
The results of the design were the concept of an Urban Riverfront as Cultural Park consisting of a Cultural Pavilion as a center for cultural activities, a cultural plaza, a riverwalk, a community space, and a multifunctional public space, which support social, cultural, educational, and recreational activities. The implementation of the Placemaking approach is able to improve the accessibility of the area, strengthen community interaction in the riverfront, and present a public space representing the local identity of Pekanbaru City. Thus, this design is expected to be a more active, inclusive, and sustainable revitalization strategy for the Siak Riverfront area.
