About the Journal

EnJourMe (English Journal of Merdeka): Culture, Language, and Teaching of English is a peer-reviewed academic journal established in 2016 and published by Universitas Merdeka Malang. Registered under ISSN 2502-5740 (online), this journal provides an international platform for scholarly discourse on English culture, language, and pedagogy.

The journal aims to promote the dissemination of high-quality research and foster dialogue among educators and researchers worldwide. Contributors are invited to submit complete, original, and unpublished articles that are not under consideration elsewhere. The journal welcomes a diverse range of content, including analyses, theoretical studies, research findings, applications of pedagogical theories, material development, and critical reviews.

 

Focus and Scope

EnJourMe (English Journal of Merdeka): Culture, Language, and Teaching of English is a scholarly journal that publishes original research and critical scholarship in the fields of language, literature, culture, communication, and language education. The journal welcomes studies from diverse linguistic and cultural contexts and encourages interdisciplinary and cross-cultural perspectives. While English studies remain an important area of the journal, EnJourMe also welcomes research involving other languages, literatures, cultures, and educational contexts.

The scope of EnJourMe (English Journal of Merdeka): Culture, Language, and Teaching of English includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Language and Linguistics: Theoretical and applied linguistics, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, morphology, phonetics and phonology, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, multilingualism, and language variation.
  • Literature and Literary Studies: Literary criticism, literary theory, comparative literature, contemporary literature, children's literature, digital literature, and the study of literary works from diverse linguistic and cultural traditions.
  • Culture and Cultural Studies: Cultural identity, intercultural communication, cultural representation, cultural heritage, globalization, popular culture, media, and cross-cultural studies.
  • Language Education and Pedagogy: Language teaching and learning, curriculum and instructional design, classroom practices, teacher education, learner development, multilingual education, and innovative approaches to language pedagogy.
  • English Language Teaching (ELT): English as a Foreign Language (EFL), English as a Second Language (ESL), English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English for Academic Purposes (EAP), and other contexts of English language education.
  • Language Materials Development and Evaluation: Development, adaptation, implementation, and evaluation of language-learning materials and educational resources.
  • Language Testing and Assessment: Language assessment, testing practices, assessment literacy, evaluation, and the development and validation of language assessment instruments.
  • Translation and Interpreting: Translation studies, interpreting, audiovisual translation, localization, literary translation, and intercultural mediation.
  • Technology and Digital Language Studies: Computer-assisted language learning (CALL), mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), online and blended learning, digital literacy, artificial intelligence in language education, and emerging technologies for language and communication.
  • Communication and Discourse: Interpersonal and intercultural communication, professional and academic communication, discourse studies, multimodal communication, and communication in digital and professional contexts.

EnJourMe welcomes empirical research, conceptual studies, literature reviews, and critical review articles that offer significant theoretical, methodological, or practical contributions to the fields within its scope. The journal particularly encourages research that engages with diverse languages, cultures, educational contexts, and emerging interdisciplinary issues.

 

Publication Frequency

EnJourMe (English Journal of Merdeka): Culture, Language, and Teaching of English is a biannual, peer-reviewed academic journal published twice a year, in July and December.

The journal publishes original research articles, conceptual papers, literature reviews, and other scholarly contributions that fall within its focus and scope. Each issue undergoes an editorial and peer-review process to ensure the quality, relevance, and academic integrity of the published articles.

The publication schedule is as follows:

  • July — First issue of the year
  • December — Second issue of the year

Manuscripts are accepted throughout the year and processed upon submission in accordance with the journal's editorial and peer-review procedures. Acceptance and publication are subject to the completion of the review, revision, and editorial decision-making processes.

 

Journal History

EnJourMe (English Journal of Merdeka): Culture, Language, and Teaching of English was established in September 2015 by a team of lecturers from the D3 English Program at Universitas Merdeka Malang. The journal was established as an academic platform for disseminating scholarly works in English language, literature, culture, and teaching. Its name reflects its institutional affiliation with the D3 English Program and Universitas Merdeka Malang, while its original visual identity, including its orange color scheme, represents the program's identity.

Since its establishment, EnJourMe has continuously developed its editorial management, publication standards, and academic visibility. One of its early milestones was its inclusion in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) on August 8, 2017, demonstrating its commitment to open and accessible scholarly communication.

In 2018, the journal began strengthening its publication standards by revising its Author Guidelines and manuscript template on May 21–22. The Editorial Board was updated on October 10, 2018, and the Author Guidelines were revised again on February 7, 2019. These developments reflected the journal's ongoing efforts to improve the consistency and quality of its editorial and publication processes.

A significant milestone was achieved in 2019, when EnJourMe received accreditation from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia through Decree No. 28/E/KPT/2019. The accreditation applied to Volume 6, Issue 2 (2021) through Volume 11, Issue 1 (2026). This recognition marked an important stage in the journal's development and affirmed its position within Indonesia's national scholarly publishing system.

Throughout 2019 and 2020, EnJourMe continued to refine its publication format. The manuscript template was revised in July 2019 (Vol. 4, No. 1), followed by the appointment of a new Editor-in-Chief on December 17, 2019. Another template revision was implemented in 2020 (Vol. 5, No. 1) to further improve the presentation and consistency of published articles.

The journal continued to strengthen its editorial structure in the following years. On August 6, 2023, significant adjustments were made to the Review and Editorial Boards to support the quality and effectiveness of the peer-review process. On January 5, 2024, a new Managing Editor and additional Editorial Board members were appointed, further strengthening the journal's editorial capacity and commitment to sustainable publication management.

As EnJourMe continues to evolve, the journal has also broadened its focus and scope. While initially centered primarily on English language, literature, culture, and teaching, the journal now welcomes scholarly contributions addressing language, literature, culture, communication, and language education across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts. This broader orientation reflects the development of contemporary language and humanities scholarship and enables the journal to engage with a wider range of academic communities.

The journal's accreditation status is subject to periodic national evaluation and reassessment. Regardless of changes in its accreditation level, EnJourMe remains committed to continuous improvement. The journal continues to strengthen its editorial policies, peer-review procedures, publication ethics, manuscript guidelines, digital publishing practices, and academic scope. These ongoing efforts are intended to improve the journal's quality, transparency, accessibility, and scholarly relevance.

From Volume 10, Issue 1, EnJourMe introduced a publication fee as part of its evolving publication policy. Following this change, the journal's DOAJ status is currently under review. EnJourMe continues to improve its publication policies and open-access practices to ensure greater transparency, sustainability, and alignment with international standards.

Today, EnJourMe continues its development as a biannual, peer-reviewed, open-access journal, providing a platform for researchers, academics, and practitioners to disseminate scholarly contributions in language, literature, culture, communication, and language education. The journal remains committed to academic integrity, rigorous peer review, editorial professionalism, and continuous quality improvement.
